Under Arvind’s leadership MITACS brought about a change in the way in which much of applied mathematics was carried out in Canada and an equally important change in the perception of the mathematical sciences by Canadian industry and public sector. The injection of new funding into the mathematical sciences enabled networks of researchers to collaboratively tackle important industrial projects while at the same time developing research infrastructure. The range of scientific areas addressed by mathematical methodologies also expanded into non-traditional areas of “industrial mathematics”. The seamless inclusion of statistical, computing and engineering scientists within the MITACS networks broke down barriers and brought these disciplines closer to each other as well as to the research sponsors. MITACS was a ready supporter of inter-institute and inter-society initiatives, sponsoring study groups and conferences. In particular, MITACS leadership in the ICIAM 2011 organisation in Vancouver was a key factor in its success. While MITACS success was also built on the hard work of many CAIMS*SCMAI members (and non-members), working both scientifically and administratively across Canada, Prof. Gupta’s inclusive and constructive attitude, coupled with his energetic and visionary leadership were a key ingredient and his service to the Canadian Applied Mathematics community at large is exemplary.
