I believe the is a problem with Canada Post, possibly due to increased mail during the holiday season. I do apologize for the delay and hope hope that you will receive your Newsletter soon. In the meantime, however, we have made the newsletter available electronically on the CAIMS*SCMAI website: http://www.caims.ca/Society/Nwslttrs/59/ Membership renewal forms were sent with the Newsletters. If you do wish to wait until they arrive to renew, you can download the form from the caims website: http://www.caims.ca/Society/subscribe.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ====== ITEM 2 ====== From: jack macki Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2004 13:50:48 -0700 The Canadian Applied Mathematics Quarterly We have been working for three years to bring CAMQ up to date and to get its finances in order, and that should be accomplished by Summer, 2005. It seems appropriate to give members of CAIMS a full overview of the journal's past, its present status, and plans for the future. First, an apology. In the last CAIMS Newsletter, I had written that the Butler Conference was in 2002--this was my error, the conference was in 2003, hence there was no delay due to slowness of the authors and/or referees as was stated in the newsletter. Operating Structure of CAMQ The constitution of the Applied Mathematics Institute of the University of Alberta requires the AMI to publish a journal of applied mathematics. Volume 1, Number 1 was published in 1993. The AMI Director appoints the managing editors, and the AMI membership approves the Editorial Board. The policy at present is to develop the Editorial Board membership in cooperation with the Board of Directors of CAIMS. The Editorial Board will be completely reorganized in 2005. All papers come to the CAMQ Office in Edmonton, and are sent to appropriate members of the Editorial Board for evaluation by referees of the editor's choice. Most of this is done by e-mail and ftp. Full hardcopy documentation is kept for each paper. Dana McCallum does the secretarial work, at no cost to CAMQ or the AMI--her services are covered by the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences of the U of A. When a paper is accepted, we try to get the authors to provide TeX files of some sort. These are reformatted into each issue by Ed and Elizabeth Leonard of our department. If the authors cannot provide TeX files, we cover the cost of preparing them. Once an issue is prepared, the proofs are sent by e-mail to the authors for proofing. When all of the proofs are returned, the issue is sent to our printer (currently Priority Printing, in Edmonton). The managing editors do the proofing of the printer's proofs. This can be quite exciting---two recent issues were lacking minus signs and capital gammas throughout (about 200 occurrences), and similar problems appear on a regular basis, almost always related to font discrepancies at the printer's end of things. Present managing editors of CAMQ are Bryant Moodie and Jack Macki. Jack sits on the CAIMS Board of Directors and keeps the Board updated on CAMQ's affairs. History CAMQ was founded with the help of substantial startup grants from the University of Alberta, CAIMS, and the Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium (RMMC). The U of A is a charter member of the RMMC, which has 24 members, with head office at Arizona State University. The RMMC publishes three journals, of which The Rocky Mountain J. Math. is the best known--this journal makes sizable profit which the RMMC uses to promote mathematics in the Rocky Mountain Region. The RMMC did the TeX editing and printing for the first 7 volumes (= one year = four issues) of CAMQ, plus volume 8 (2000) No. 1. The RMMC charged out TeX editing and printing of CAMQ at about $20,000 U.S. per volume, which meant that CAMQ was running a deficit of $15,000 U.S. per year, covered by the RMMC. Starting with volume 8, No. 2, production was moved to Canada. Because the RMMC was sitting on production while they thought we were dealing with the deficit (communication was dismal in both directions), the journal was behind almost two full years. The AMI agreed to provide CAMQ free of charge to the members of the RMMC for the indefinite future as our way of showing our appreciation for their years of financial backing. Because of our inexperience in publishing a journal, we contracted with the Canadian Mathematical Society's excellent TeX editing service, based in Winnipeg under Michael Doob. The printing was done by a private firm, Quality Color, which had offices on our campus. We were able to produce the journal for about $15,000 C per volume: CMS editing was about $10,000, printing about $5,000, postage $500. Present Status We have now moved the TeX editing to Edmonton, as described above, and are using a different printing firm. We are able to produce one volume (four issues) of CAMQ for about $12,000 C. We mail out 148 copies of each issue, roughly 65 institutional and 30 individual, the remainder to RMMC members and the Editorial Board. The individuals pay $40 per year (they are all CAIMS members) and institutions pay $205. There are still a few Canadian universities that do not subscribe. The journal now pays its way, we have about $19,000 in the bank (from subscriptions for upcoming volumes plus a sizable grant from the Butler conference), and the AMI stands ready to provide help if needed. As of December 13, 2004, we have all of Volume 11(2003) at the printer--well, not quite, we are waiting on one author for the last number, we have proofed the printer's output for numbers 1 and 2, while number 3 is due back from the printer any day now for proofing. We had hoped to mail out all of Volume 11 as one mailing before Christmas, but it looks like it will actually go some time in January. Volume 12(2004) is being TeX edited during December and January, author proofing should take place in February, with mail out in March. Again, we hope to send out all four numbers in one package. At that time we will finally be current. At that stage we will proceed with getting the journal listed in the relevant citations journals, and also mount a carefully targeted institutional subscription campaign. We have agreed with the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences that we will devote one issue each year to the reports from the PIMS Industrial Problem Solving Workshops. This will begin with Volume 12 (2004)--we already have the reports in hand, thanks to outstanding work by Sean Bohun. We presently have 17 accepted papers waiting to be printed in Volumes 12 and 13, with 9 papers under review (excluding the PIMS IPSW reports). This, with the IPSW reports, will take care of those two volumes, plus a paper or two for Volume 14. Our rejection rate is very high, about 40%, and if you check out the journal I think you will approve of its high quality. We do emphasize applied and industrial mathematics, so some papers are published not because represent highly original mathematics, but because they represent serious work on very tough real-world problems. The other side of this coin is that we often send back excellent papers that do not have significant applied interest. We need, and have consistently received from many individuals, strong support in the form of high quality papers from the Canadian community in applied mathematics. We also need to have CAIMS members check that their institution subscribes! Finally, we welcome your input concerning editorial board membership--we need to cover all modern areas of applied mathematics, and we need individuals with high standards and a pro-active attitude. Finally, we plan to eventually post all published papers on the CAMQ website (presently we just post tables of contents), accessible to all subscribers. Based on the author’s notes from his one-semester course taught at many universities around the world, it is primarily intended for undergraduates in electrical, mechanical, chemical and civil engineering, physics, applied mathematics and computer science. Many sections are also directly relevant to graduate students in the mathematical and physical sciences. In this computer age, classical mathematics may sometimes appear less relevant. However, a solid understanding of the underlying mathematics is necessary in order to avoid gross errors in computer solutions. The central topic of this text is numerical methods and the calculus of variations to physical problems. More than 100 solved problems with detailed derivations are included. Approximately 120 exercises are also featured, together with solution hints and answers. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM. Contents: Preface; Introduction; Ordinary Differential Equations; Partial Differential Equations; Nonlinear Differential Equations and Stability; The Calculus of Variations; Applications; Appendices; Index. Matiur Rahman's previous WIT Press title Mathematical Methods with Applications (1-85312-847-3) was chosen by Choice as one of their "Outstanding Academic Titles". Also, as the Web has emerged as a large, distributed data repository, it is easy nowadays to access a multitude of data sources. Therefore, companies must confront the multiple data source mining problem. Mining local patterns at different data sources and forwarding the local patterns (rather than the original raw data) to a centralized place for global pattern analysis provides a feasible way to deal with multiple data source problems. As such the local patterns at each data source may be required for that data source in the first instance, so knowledge discovery at each data source is also important and useful. /Local pattern analysis/ is an in-place strategy specifically designed for mining multiple data sources, providing a feasible way to generate globally interesting models from data in multidimensional spaces. With local pattern analysis, one can better understand the distribution and inconsistency of local/global data patterns, and develop high-performance data mining systems to deal with multiple data sources in which local patterns are fused to make global patterns. Although the data collected from the Web brings us opportunities in improving the quality of decisions, it generates a significant challenge: how to efficiently identify quality knowledge from different data sources and how to integrate them. This problem is difficult to solve due to the facts that multiple data source mining is a procedure of searching for useful patterns in multidimensional spaces; and putting all data together from different sources might amass a huge database for centralized processing and cause problems such as data privacy breaches, data inconsistency, data conflict, and irrelevant data. This special issue will provide a leading forum for timely, in-depth presentation of progress in the theory and principles underlying local pattern analysis for multiple data source mining. *Topics of Interest * We solicit papers on the following non-exhaustive list of topics pertaining to multiple data source mining: - Foundational issues - Application case studies - Data privacy issues - Data cleansing, data preparation, data/pattern selection, conflict and inconsistency resolution - Data/pattern clustering, data source classification - Ontology - Local pattern analysis and fusion - Post-processing of local patterns - Resource-bounded local pattern analysis - New solutions for multiple data source mining - Distributed and parallel data mining *Submission Guidelines* Please follow the guideline of the submissions on: http://www.kluweronline.com/issn/1384-5810/contents ** *Important Dates* Submission Deadline March 25, 2005 Author Notification July 20, 2005 Camera-readies Due September 5, 2005 Special issue to be published in First half of 2006 *Special Issue Guest Editors* *Dr. Shichao Zhang ** (*University of Technology, Sydney, Australia) *Prof. Xindong Wu * (University of Vermont, USA) *Prof. Mohammed J. For conference venue locations, special events, hotel booking and other related information please consult http://www.iccsa.org/ Workshop Description The workshop of Modelling Complex Systems will aim at both basic and applied research on complex systems, with particular emphasis on emergent behaviour. The investigation of nonlinear processes, predictability and concepts such as order, complexity and information interdependence inform our understanding of how complex systems behave and may provide insight on the dynamics, development and control. Examples of systems exhibiting complex and emergent behaviour may include, but is not limited to the following: . Biological systems . Physical systems . Social systems . Financial systems . Traffic ad transportation systems . Information Systems The workshop will provide an opportunity for researchers in different disciplines to explore potential for cross-fertilization of ideas in modelling complexity. CALL FOR PAPERS (PDF version available here) Submission of Papers and Proceedings Full papers of 6 to 10 pages (Letter or A4 paper) for oral presentation are invited. Proceedings of the Workshop will be published in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. All contributions should be original and not published elsewhere or intended to be published during the review period. Contributions from more applied related fields in industry and commerce are very welcome. Submitted papers should have a maximum of 10 pages. All papers must be presented by one of the authors who must register for the conference and pay the fee. To ensure high quality, all papers will be thoroughly reviewed two reviewers. They take place on two consecutive weekends, in two nearby locations (only about 200km away from each other, in the hills of France and on the coast of Spain). The first one will be in Carcassonne, France (near Toulouse): IPSI-2005 FRANCE (Carcassonne is a UNESCO World Heritage City) Hotel de la Cite (arrival: 23 April 05 / departure: 26 April 05) Deadlines: 20 December 04 (abstract) & 20 January 05 (full paper) The second one will be in Costa Brava, Spain (near Barcelona): IPSI-2005 SPAIN (S'Agaro is the Pearl of Costa Brava) Hostal de la Gavina (arrival: 28 April 05 / departure: 1 May 05) Deadlines: 27 December 04 (abstract) / 27 January 05 (full paper) All IPSI BgD conferences are non-profit. They bring together the elite of the world of science; so far, we have had seven Nobel Laureates speaking at the opening ceremonies. The conferences always take place in some of the most attractive places of the world. All those who come to IPSI conferences once, always love to come back (because of the unique professional quality and the extremely creative atmosphere); lists of past participants are on the web, as well as details of future conferences. These conferences are in line with the newest recommendations of the US National Science Foundation and of the EU research sponsoring agencies, to stress multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research (M.I.T. research). The speakers and activities at the conferences truly support this type of scientific interaction. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Internet * Computer Science and Engineering * Mobile Communications/Computing for Science and Business * Management and Business Administration * Education * e-Medicine * e-Oriented Bio Engineering/Science and Molecular Engineering/Science * Environmental Protection * e-Economy * e-Law * Technology Based Art and Art to Inspire Technology Developments * Internet Psychology If you would like more information on either conference, please reply to this e-mail message. If you plan to submit an abstract and paper, please let us know immediately for planning purposes. Sincerely Yours, Prof. V. Milutinovic, Chairman IPSI BgD Conferences ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======= ITEM 13 ======= CAIMS*SCMAI E-News Information CAIMS*SCMAI E-News is distributed electronically several times a year by the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society/Societe Canadienne de Mathematiques Appliquees et Industrielles (http://www.caims.ca).
