Bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, molecular evolution, computational biology, and affine fields are at the intersection between two axes: data sequences/physiology and information technology. Sequences include DNA sequences (gene, genome, organization), molecular evolution, protein structure, folding, function, and interaction, metabolic pathways, regulation signaling networks, physiology and cell biology (interspecies, interaction), as well as ecology and environment. Information technology in this context includes hardware and instrumentation, computation, as well as mathematical and physical models. The intersection between two subfields, one in each axis, generates areas including those known as genome sequencing, proteomics, functional genomics (microarrays, 2D-PAGE, ...), high-tech field ecology, genomic data analysis, statistical genomics, protein structure, prediction, protein dynamics, protein folding and design, data standards, data representations, analytical tools for complex biological data, dynamical systems modeling, as well as computational ecology. Research in these fields comprises property abstraction from the biological system, design and development of data analysis algorithms, as well as of databases and data access web-tools. Genome sequencing and related projects generate vast amounts of data that needs to be analyzed, thus emphasizing the relevance of efficient methods of data analysis and of the whole discipline. The Neurocomputing journal invites original contributions for the forthcoming special issue on Bioinformatics from a broad scope of areas. Some topics relevant to this special issue include, but are not restricted to: -- Theoretical foundations, algorithms, implementations, and complete systems -- Sequence analysis (single, multiple), alignment, annotation, etc. -- Improvements in databases and web-tools for bioinformatics -- Novel metrics and biological data preprocessing for posterior analysis -- Systems biology models and data modeling techniques including statistical inference, stochastic processes, random walks, Markov chains, hidden Markov models, motifs, profiles, dynamic programming, pattern recognition techniques, neural networks, support vector machines, evolutionary models, tree estimation, etc. -- Pathway inference, e.g. to determine where to target a drug using gene expression data and address side effects by providing information on where else a target metabolite appears. -- Key applications in diverse fields including bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, molecular evolution, computational biology, drug design, etc. Please send two hardcopies of the manuscript before October 31st, 2002, to: V. David Sanchez A., Neurocomputing - Editor in Chief - Advanced Computational Intelligent Systems P.O. Box 1424 La Caqada, CA 91012, U.S.A. Street address: 1149 Wotkyns Drive Pasadena, CA 91103, U.S.A. The diffusion of scientific culture aims at building a fundamental knowledge of modern society, comprehensible to the citizen, in which the classical studies of the oldest tradition merge harmonically with science. A good scientific culture allows everyone to exercise his/her rights in the most modern sense: with the freedom and the capability to choose autonomously, without any mediation, among the numberless options which a technologically advanced society offers its members. Rewards will issue to the best multimedia works sent to the Pirelli website that concern one of two main themes: Multimedia oriented toward Education and the Environment. Admissibility criteria vary according to the themes described below (see http://www.pirelliaward.com/ for more details) The themes chosen to promote the spread of scientific culture this year are: a) EDUCATION: for the best multimedia product directed at, or coming from, any educational institution from grade school to university. Specifically, there are two subcategories: a1) a prize for the best scientific or technologically inclined multimedia work that comes from an educational institution; and a2) a prize for the best scientific or technologically inclined multimedia work that contributes to the spread of knowledge at any level. The jury will therefore be able to reward, within the context of these two subcategories, works coming from or directed at any educational institution from grade school to college. b) ENVIRONMENT: b1) for the best multimedia product that either describes the environment or serves to safeguard it. b2) for the best multimedia publishing product (web magazine, article, essay, book?) on the subject of the environment. c) SPECIAL JUNIOR AWARD, for the best multimedia product, on any of the above subject, presented by any candidate by any candidate born after Dec 31 1980 d) TOP PIRELLI PRIZE: conferred by the Jury to the best of the above awarded submission. The Prize amounts are 15,000 Euros each of categories a) and b) and 10,000 Euros for each of categories c) and d). The overall award amounts to 80,000 euro ($65,000) ELIGIBILITY The award is open to every citizen of the world. Except for the prize described in section a1) above that is only open to educational institutions. PARTICIPATION PROCEDURE Application forms are available exclusively online, and the multimedia work must be sent (e-mail or FTP procedure) exclusively through the Internet (see below). Candidates should send the application form properly filled in, together with their work(s). The candidate who wants to participate in the contest with two or more works shall fill a registration form for each of his/her works. SUBJECT AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Multimedia works should consist of one of the following typologies or any combination of them: * Documents * Hypertextual documents * Images * Demo or Presentation, Applied, Ludic software for: - MS-DOS operating systems (any version) - Windows operating systems (any version) - Macintosh operating systems (any version) * Movies * Digitized sounds The size of multimedia works should not be over 100 Megabytes. Multimedia works with typologies and sizes different from those indicated above will be considered, provided that they are supplied on a computer device, that they are available to distribution through the Internet, and that they have obtained the authorization of the Technical Committee. All the technical details needed for an analysis of the work must be specified in the registration form. Multimedia works can be in Italian or in English. The use of any other language may make the multimedia work unacceptable. The multimedia work can be sent via FTP, or E-Mail (file attachments, up to 10Mb). Technical details for each single case will appear on the screen after the filling in of the registration form. ORIGINALITY AND COPYRIGHTS In principle, multimedia works should be unpublished and original. Nevertheless any adaptations, new issues and reviews of other works will also be considered, provided that the candidate has included something original in them and bears the responsibility of any summons arising from a possible breach of copyrights. Possible copyrights and royalties of the work submitted remain to the legal owner. Pirelli is only authorized to make a link on its Web pages. DEADLINE Participants shall send their works up to midnight (Italian time) of December 31st, 2002. The receipt date and time of the file are automatically assigned by our FTP server. Participants are invited to transmit their works as soon as they are ready, so as to enable the Technical Committee and the Jury to evaluate the multimedia works carefully. In other words, if a great deal of candidates send their works on the days just prior to the deadline, there could be the risk of a hurried evaluation. This is not in the interest of the Pirelli INTERNETional Award nor in the interest of the candidates. That is why the Jury strongly recommends to transmit your works as soon as possible. We also remind you that, since the works must be sent through the Internet, it is wise to transmit your work as soon as you can: this will allow us to inform you in time of possible problems or transmission errors. The Technical Committee, in agreement with the Jury, may postpone the term for the transmission of the work after explicit request of the candidates, which must however register before the fixed term of December 31st, 2002. The prize-giving ceremony is scheduled for Spring 2003. LIABILITY In no event shall the Technical Committee and Pirelli S.p.A. be liable for possible loss, illegal uses or incidental damages to multimedia works. It is strongly recommended that Participants retain a copy of the material sent. Rome will be the competent forum for any controversy. In case of a discrepancy between the Italian and the English Regulations, the Italian version will prevail. UNACCEPTABILITY Participants should fill in the application form in any single part; incompleteness may cause the multimedia work to be considered unacceptable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======= ITEM 14 ======= CAIMS*SCMAI E-News Information CAIMS*SCMAI E-News is distributed electronically several times a year by the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society/Societe Canadienne de Mathematiques Appliquees et Industrielles (http://www.caims.ca).
