All of Volume 10 (2002) has either been mailed (10-1, 10-2), is being printed (10-3), or has just gone to the printer (10-4). All of Volume 11 will be devoted to proceedings from the Butler Conference, and we are presently slotting accepted papers into Volume 12 (2004). Thanks to wonderful money management by Herb Freedman and Jo So, the Butler Conference is able to make a substantial contribution to CAMQ. Volume 10, nos. 1 and 2 are especially big, and present some very nice papers from conferences and workshops sponsored by CAIMS/MITACS/PIMS. CAMQ has not renewed its contract for TeX editing with the Canadian Math. Society. Although their service was excellent, the cost was far too high for a small journal like ours. We expect to reduce our TeX editing costs by 50% by moving the TeX editing to the U of A. We are still evaluating our relationship with Quality Color Printing on the U of A, which has certainly been a interesting one, and at times very frustrating. We have had some absolutely strange experiences with mail service. One of our editors, Hal Smith at Arizona State University, never received his reprints of a published article, nor did he receive his mailed out copy of the journal. A check of our address labels confirmed that everything was correct, but nothing ever arrived nor were we informed. If you have not received your copies of CAMQ, let us know (danam@ualberta.ca). The goal of the workshop is to provide researchers and graduate students with an introduction to the theory and applications of stochastic point processes in an informal atmosphere. There will be a 6 hour mini-course on point process methods in probability, complemented by talks from leading researchers who will focus on the applications of point processes in disciplines such as neuroscience, finance, telecommunications, statistics, simulation and physics. The invited speakers include: John Braun (University of Western Ontario) Lightning and Forest Fire Ignitions. André Longtin (Department of Physics, University of Ottawa) Analysis of non-renewal neural point processes. Ely Merzbach (Bar Ilan University, Israel) What is a multi-parameter renewal process? Bruno Rémillard (HEC, Montréal) Point processes and applications in credit risk. Bruce Smith (Dalhousie University, Halifax) Exceedance Point Processes, with Application to Estimation of Extreme Sea Levels. Ryszard Szekli (University of Wroclaw, Poland) Stochastic ordering of point processes with time dynamics: overview of methods and applications. We are also encouraging graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to give contributed presentations on their current research involving either the theory or application of point processes. They are welcome to present work in progress, and could benefit greatly from feedback from the experts present. There are funds available for expenses of students and postdoctoral fellows, so please encourage your students to apply for funding and to contribute a talk. The deadline for submission of abstracts and requests for funding is January 21, 2004. For forms and full information, visit our website: www.mathstat.uottawa.ca/conf/fields04/fields-main.html Ottawa is a great place to be in February. Winterlude will be in progress on the weekend preceding the workshop, so bring your skates and skis. If you require any additional information, don't hesitate to contact either of us. To continue the success of the MITACS-PIMS-Health Canada Meeting on SARS held in BIRS in September of 2003, in furthering the fruitful interplay among mathematical, statistical, and epidemiological sciences, and to provide effective training for graduate students and junior researchers in the collaborative research in infectious diseases based on mathematical modeling and qualitative analysis, MITACS and PIMS are sponsoring a Special Program on Infectious Diseases at the Banff International Research Station in Banff, Alberta. The program, organized by the team of the MITACS project Transmission Dynamics and Spatial Spread of Infectious Diseases: Modeling, Prediction and Control, consists of a Summer School (for graduate students and beginning postdoctoral fellows) June 19 - June 27 followed by a Research Conference June 28 - July 2, 2004. The Research Team of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries' study is pleased to announce the membership of the study's Consensus Panel. The study entitled 0ptimizing the Transformation of Knowledge Dissemination: Towards a Canadian Research Strategy aims to identify critical areas within the Canadian scholarly communication system that must be addressed and propose a research strategy for knowledge dissemination in Canada. As such, the study will be employing a consensus process methodology using the input of Canadian researchers- the creators and users of scholarly knowledge. The ten panel members were drawn from a pool of over 70 researchers from a range of disciplines and at various stages of the research careers. Over the next several months, the panel will be considering input from other Canadian researchers, stakeholders, and experts using web-based technologies. These presentations will also be available to all interested parties to the general public via the study website. The Panel members are as follows: Mr. Darren Anderson, Ph. D. Student, Chemistry, University of Toronto. Dr. Andrew Applejohn, Director, Aurora Research Institute, Artic Studies, Aurora College, Inuvik. M. Richard Cunningham, Ph. They often provide solutions to real problems for which other, conventional approaches fail. John von Neumann, who is recognized as the father of cellular automata, would have been a hundred years old in 2004. ACRI 2004 wants to commemorate this important date by inviting researchers to submit contributions related to von Neumann's work or to the emergence of organisation in systems in which collaboration between components wins over the individual behaviour. The goal of this conference is to collect contributions concerning Cellular Automata in various fields such as theory, implementations and applications.
