The nominating committee has prepared an excellent slate of candidates, but we also welcome nominations from our membership. Nominations should reach the secretary, Sue Ann Campbell (sacampbell@uwaterloo.ca), by JANUARY 31, 2002. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ====== ITEM 3 ====== Call for Nominations for the CAIMS*SCMAI Doctoral Dissertation Award The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society/Societe Canadienne de Mathematiques Appliquees et Industrielles solicits nominations for the 2002 Doctoral Dissertation Award. This award has been established to recognize and to publicize an outstanding PhD thesis in Applied Mathematics defended at a Canadian University during the calendar year prior to the year of the award. The award consists of a certificate, a monetary prize, and a free one-year membership in the Society. The winner will be invited to present a communication based on the thesis at the Annual Meeting of the Society. Assistance with expenses to attend the meeting will be provided. The candidate must also submit a separate letter identifying the possible applications of the work, as well as proof of the official date of acceptance of the thesis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ====== ITEM 4 ====== Call For Nominations for the CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society/Societe Canadienne de Mathematiques Appliquees et Industrielles solicits nominations for the CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize. The recipient of the award will be selected based on her/his innovative research contributions in an emerging area of applied or industrial mathematics. Eligible nominees should hold a permanent position within Canada or be a CAIMS*SCMAI member of at least four years standing. A prize of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque will be presented to the recipient at the CAIMS*SCMAI Annual Meeting. The recipient will be invited to give a plenary lecture at the CAIMS*SCMAI Annual Meeting in the year of the award. Altogether 9 professors were honored, among whom five are mathematicians (J. Li at Stanford, S. Zhang at Columbia, G. Tian at MIT, F. Lin at Courant/NYU,and S. Shen at Alberta). Sam's selection for this honor is based on his innovative work on the "sampling error estimate for climate observations." The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Research just published a new authoritative report "Climate Change 2001", whose theory on uncertainty estimate of global warming is based on Sam's work. The report cited four of Sam Shen's papers. Sam is also among the 11 people invited by President Lu Yongqiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences being on the Advisory Committee for the Innovation Projects of the academy. The eleven people visited China during September 3-7, 2001 and were received by President Lu Yongqiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice Premier Li Lanqin. The panel's activities were well covered by the major Chinese media, including China Central TV, People's Daily, China Daily, Xinhua News Agency, SciTech Times, and Guangmin Daily. Sam was also selected as an "Overseas Assessor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2001-2005)." This is an honor given to the excellent scientists (mainly overseas Chinese) to evaluate the research programs of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Altogether 100 assessors will be appointed by the academy.
